Comedic Shorts Program loaded with laughs, award-winners

Featuring SXSW faves The European Kid and Train Town

 

Chicago, IL – First Tuesdays with The Midwest Independent Film Festival continue with the 2008 Comedic Shorts Program, screening on Tuesday, May 6th at Landmark's Century Centre Cinema, beginning at 6 p.m.  This laughworthy lineup includes recent South by Southwest selections Train Town and The European Kid.  All filmmakers will be in attendance along with representative cast and crew.

TRAIN TOWN.  Official Selection, 2008 South By Southwest Film Festival.  A 1950s conservative patriot battles a 1960s sex, drugs, and rock 'n roll hippie on the minor scale battleground of a model train town.  Directed by Keith Bearden, produced by Paula Froehle and Ericka Frederick.  Click here for the review on Quiet Earth (contains spoilers)!

 

STARTING TOMORROW.  Grand Prize Winner, 2007 Element 79 Film Festival.  Written by Kevin Mulroy, directed by Devin Bousquet of Foundation Post.

 

THE EUROPEAN KID.  Official Selection, 2008 South By Southwest Film Festival.  It's out of the frying pan and into the fire for Neil Adamski. Tonight his problem with gambling and his problem with fidelity come to a head. And at the dinner table of the O'Connell's no less--a seemingly picture perfect family who, by the end of the meal, will find themselves united by a new-found hatred.  Directed by Ian Martin, filmed in Elmhurst, IllinoisClick here for the trailer!

 

WORLD PREMIERE!  GAME OF LOVE.  The latest from Deerfield, IL natives The Redwalls also features Chicago’s own Roller Derby darlings, The Windy City Rollers, as they slam into video action to tease and taunt this earnest young rock band whose just trying to play their love ballad “Game of Love”. The band plays their song as the dames skate fast, fall hard and try to steal the band’s show.  Directed by Ruth Leitman of “Lipstick and Dynamite” fame, produced by Leigh Jones.

 

THE CHERRY TREE.  What starts as a 'behind the scenes' clip quickly turns into mayhem as strange events unfold.  From Milwaukee filmmaker Carlo Besasie.

 

CHECK PLEASE.  Official Selection, Santa Barbara International, Cinequest, Miami Shorts, Cleveland and Florida Film Festivals.  Meeting her boyfriend's parents for the first time could not have gone any better for Julie. And then the check came.  From Chicago filmmaker Larry Ziegelman.

 

REGRETS.  Directed by Steve Delahoyde.  In 2006, the *Chicago Tribune *named Steve one of the "Top Five filmmakers working in Chicago."

 

DEATH IS MY CO-PILOT.  The latest comedic short from Aaron Yonda and Matt Sloan of Blame Society Productions, whose past shorts "The Life and Death of a Pumpkin" and "Chad Vader: Day Shift Manager" were nominated for Best Comedy at our festival in 2006 and 2007, respectively.  A normal man is accompanied by his own personal Grim Reaper.

 

MUST LIKE MAGIC.  The touching story of a magician and his apprentice.  Directed by Steve Stein of Cutters, featuring Chicago talents David Pasquesi and T.J. Jagodowski.

 

BYE.  A suicidal therapist can't seem to kill himself.  The latest from Chicago filmmaker, Element 79 Creative Director and Project Greenlight finalist Scott Smith!

 

THE JOB.  Official Selection, South by Southwest Film Festival.  A satricial short film about the immigration debate, written and directed by Jonathan Browning of Screaming Frog Productions.

 

MUSIC VIDEO: "OUT TO GET YOU."  High-powered cat-and-mouse hijinks drive this music video from Chicago's Jonny Rumble.
 

Screening Information: Tuesday, May 6, 2008 -- festivities begin with a Pre-Show Cocktail Reception (sponsored by GUINNESS Draught) at Landmark's Century Centre Cinema (2828 North Clark) at 6 p.m.  The Producers' Panel will be held in the theatre at 6:30 p.m.; this month's topic is Film Financing.  All filmmakers will be in attendance as the Comedic Shorts Program begins promptly at 7:30 p.m.  A post-screening reception will be held immediately following the film at Forno Diablo, 433 W.
