The Legend of Swee' Pea

Director:
Benjamin May

At 16 Lloyd Daniels was named the "next Magic Johnson." Now 46, his life story has been a proverbial roller-coaster. On the one hand, his story is an epic crash and burn tragedy-- he came from one of the poorest neighborhoods in New York City, he destroyed his body through crack addiction, he got shot three times in the chest. On the other, his story is also an improbable tale of triumphing against the odds: in spite of all of the above, Lloyd Daniels made it to the NBA-- the only player in NBA history to have never graduated high school (and probably also the only one with bullet shrapnel in his chest). But what kind of player might he have been without all of the misadventures? That is a question that torments Lloyd Daniels today and one that each of our interview subjects-- among them, Jerry Tarkanian, David Robinson, and Avery Johnson-- asks. Ultimately, the story of Lloyd Daniels explores how a man must eventually come to terms and find peace with a life imperfectly lived.
