MIFF Conversation Series launch at Stage 18
Last month, we launched the new Midwest Independent Film Festival Conversation Series, an event series to explore topics in-depth through workshops, lectures, and panel discussions. This inaugural event, Finding Success in the Chicago Production Industry: a panel discussion with Chicago film industry professionals, was hosted by Stage 18 and produced in partnership with p3 mediaworks.
The discussion, moderated by Mary Kay Cook (MIFF Advisory Council President) dove deeply into film career navigation strategies-- balancing passion projects alongside commercial work, and how to think critically, creatively and discerningly about approaching both simultaneously throughout your career as a filmmaker. The panel featured Patrick Coleman, Corey Gilbert (P3 Mediaworks), Damon Hennessey, Mary McDonnell, Suzie Moore, and Tim Troy -- each representing different areas of the industry-- for this discussion. (Pro-tip: search hashtag #MIFFConvoSeries on Twitter to see real-time updates, insights and quotes from the evening.)
Inspired by positive feedback on our monthly Producers Panels prior to each First Tuesday screening event, we developed this series to offer additional ways to help support the Midwest film community. Each event will be held separately from our usual first-Tuesday-of-each-month screening events, and will bring people together from all career levels to talk, listen and learn.
Our next event are tentatively scheduled for late June, and we plan to continue them throughout the year. While we got many ideas for future workshops and panel topics from the audience members at this initial event, please let us know what topics you'd like to see at this event series by shooting me an email (amy at midwestfilm dot com, yo!) or letting me know at the next First Tuesday event.
Speaking of, we hope to see you at our April event-- the Chicago premiere of SAME BOAT, directed by Chris Roberti and written by Chris Roberti and Josh Itzkowitz. We'll also enjoy this month's pre-screening Producer's Panel-- The Oscars Experience, panel of Oscar-nominated Midwest filmmakers to share their experiences attending the Academy Awards. The panel will include Mark Mitten, Gordon Quinn, and Diane Quon and will be moderated by Chicago Tribune columnist Nina Metz. (Tickets include pre-screening cocktail reception, Producers Panel, screening, and after party admission. Reserve your tickets here!)
